February Wine Subscriptions Tasting Notes

FEBRUARY

Romance is in the air, and your monthly wine subscription delivers on the promise of love! These wines all fit the theme of Love, and we hope you fall in love with them as much as we do! You’ll notice that we’ve been including a few Rose wines in your kits; if you haven’t had one yet, why don’t you pop the cork on one and enjoy it while you read through this list. The goal is to illustrate the true nature of Rose, which is not the sugar-sweet “pink juice” you may think it is. Let us know what you think so far!

 

Lou Gat Purple

Red Wine from Côtes de Gascogne · France

Grapes:

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tannat

Tasting Notes:

A slight pepper tickles the nose above a nice punch of forest fruits. Mellow in taste with smooth tannins, this wine still delivers a fruity, sweet spice. Wonderful alone, or paired with red meat and cheese.

 

Lou Gat Green

White Wine from Hérault · France

Grapes:

Carignan, Grenache Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc

Tasting Notes:

Intense citrus fruits rush at you in the aroma of the wine. Pineapple and white peach round out the palate, and while this is a dry wine, it has a light, sweet-ish finish. Wonderful as an aperitif, or enjoy with grilled fish or veggies, mixed salads or Asian dishes.

 

Secret Affair

White Wine from Okanagan Valley · Canada

Grapes:

Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier

Tasting Notes:

A Peary, Peachy aroma is on the nose, while the palate has notes of crisp, juicy red apples. Notes of Honey will linger long after the balanced acidity and mouthfeel have departed. Great with spicy Thai foods, roasted chicken and grilled vegetables.

 

Côtes-du-Rhône

Grenache

Tasting Notes:

Intense black cherry lies just below the surface of this complex wine. Its long finish compliments its plum nose with spices and liquorice that dance on the edge of your tongue. Chicken, prawns & sausage pair well with this wine.

 

Bianco Dolce – Sweet White

White Wine from Provincia di Pavia · Italy

Grapes:

Chardonnay

Tasting Notes:

This pale straw-colored wine has fine bubbles and is best enjoyed chilled. Peach, yellow apples and candied citrus are evident with a sweet palate that is incredibly refreshing. Best enjoyed with classic Italian dishes, white meats or spicy foods.

Hush Rosé

Rosé Wine from Okanagan Valley · Canada

Grapes:

Chardonnay

Tasting Notes:

Maraschino cherries dominate the bouquet while strawberries rule the palate leading to a dry finish. Smoked Salmon or a strawberry-goat cheese salad would pair wonderfully with this wine.

DOC Sparkling Wine

White Wine from Vino d'Italia · Italy

Ortrugo

Tasting Notes:

Tight, densely packed bubbles will tingle your tongue when this classic Italian varietal hits it. Dry palate with a slight sweet finish. Best enjoyed with each other!

Valpolicella Ripasso

Red Wine from Valpolicella Ripasso · Italy

Grapes:

Corvina, Rondinella

Tasting Notes:

A concentrated perfume of red and black fruit as well as some dried cherry intensity that the Ripasso process adds. Full-bodied on the palate, with a lovely balance between opulent cherry-pie character and supple structure. Pairs well with Beef or Game.

 

Gris Blanc

Red Wine from Pays d'Oc · France

Grenache

Tasting Notes:

This pale pink wine provides a slight sparkle on the palate which helps bring all the fruit to the forefront. The minerally finish pairs very well with seafood or pasta salad.

 

Cava Brut

Sparkling Wine from Cava · Spain

Grapes:

Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Parellada

Tasting Notes:

Lemons, peaches & white flowers are in the nose, while apples and stone fruit are balanced with a yeasty complexity. The crisp finish compliments cured meats, lean fish or shellfish.

 

Pràgal

Winery:

Tenuta Santa Maria di Gaetano Bertani

Region:

Red Wine from Verona · Italy

Grapes:

Shiraz/Syrah, Merlot

Tasting Notes:

Vinified with both fresh and partially dried grapes, this deep ruby wine has an engaging bouquet of red fruit preserves, dried roses & black cherry. Dark spice, tobacco and black pepper are balanced with a bright acidity and soft tannins. This wine is the perfect pair for pasta and light risotto dishes, beef carpaccio or light to medium aged cheeses.
